Biography

The artist, Eirikur Eiriksson, uses landscape as a starting point for his exploration on the changes that time has on his subjects. His paintings are representations that often escape the passer-by as they belong to one's immediate surroundings. Those can be a tree in a neighbourhood, a distinctive and familiar monument that is part of a landscape and he re-presents them to us in his work. The subjects painted become something other than their usual appearance as the artist is conveying the magic in their subtle changes, moods and their constant transformations through time. Recurrent themes in Eirikur's watercolours are the Grotta Light House, Blafell Mountain and these are painted over and over again in different lights, hours, seasons and moods. The viewer sees through his work the familiar in different light. Eirikur's watercolours are series based; they convey the same subjects over and over drawing from them the slight changes unnoticeable to the ordinary eyes. The artist's intent is to draw attention to these alterations and their poetic connotations. In his watercolours, he employs a language that contemplates subtlety in variations occurring in his subjects. This becomes a personal artist's quest to capture the passing time, the beauty and the transformations. Eirikur wants the viewer to pause and really see the familiar in a new way. His watercolours strive to assert the ordinary becoming extraordinary and meaningful.
